GSTIN Checker and Validator India
A free GSTIN checker and validator for India. Enter a 15-digit Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) to verify whether its format and check digit are valid. The tool decodes the state from the first two digits, extracts the embedded 10-character PAN, and breaks down each part of the GSTIN. Validation runs entirely in your browser.

GSTIN Checker / Validator (India)
GSTIN Validator / Checker (India)
Enter a 15-digit GST number to validate its format and checksum, decode the state, and extract the embedded PAN.
0/15 characters
This tool validates the GSTIN format and checksum offline in your browser. It does NOT confirm live GST registration status. For the legal name, active/cancelled status and registration details, use the official Search Taxpayer service on gst.gov.in.
How to use the GSTIN checker
Paste or type a 15-character GSTIN into the box. As soon as 15 characters are entered, the tool validates the format and check digit, decodes the state from the first two digits, and extracts the embedded PAN. A green badge means the number is well-formed and the checksum is valid; a red badge lists exactly what is wrong (length, format, unknown state or bad checksum).
Use the breakdown table below the result to understand each part of the number before you record it on an invoice or in your books.
Understanding the 15-digit GSTIN format
A GSTIN encodes a lot of information. The first two digits are the state code (for example 27 for Maharashtra, 29 for Karnataka, 07 for Delhi). The next ten characters are the taxpayer’s PAN, so a GSTIN always carries the business’s PAN inside it. The thirteenth character indicates how many registrations the same PAN holds in that state, the fourteenth is the letter Z by default, and the fifteenth is a checksum computed over the first fourteen characters.
Format validation vs live GST portal verification
- This tool checks format + checksum offline — it does not call the GST portal.
- A valid format does not guarantee the registration is active.
- For live status, legal name and registration date, use Search Taxpayer on gst.gov.in.
- Match the embedded PAN with the supplier’s PAN for an extra check.
- Your input stays in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server.
For CA firms and accounts teams
Validating GSTINs is a routine part of GST compliance for chartered accountants. Before filing GSTR-1 or claiming input tax credit, firms verify that every supplier and customer GSTIN is correctly formatted to avoid mismatches and ITC disallowance. This offline checker is a fast first step that catches typos instantly, after which the live status can be confirmed on the GST portal for client records.
